Overview
The Yucatan peninsula is a limestone platform where underground freshwater rivers are found underground. Thousands of years ago, the ground collapsed in some areas, creating eyes on the earth, allowing us to see and access the underground rivers: the doors to the underworld for the Mayans: the cenotes (D’zonot in Maya).
The cenotes are entrances to the underground tunnel systems and caves decorated with fossils and beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. The Yucatan Peninsula has thousands of cenotes, of these, only a low percentage have been explored for technical cave divers since the 1980s. They found animal and human remains.
